Folkestone Harbour Arm

Folkestone’s recently regenerated Harbour Arm signals the rebirth of Folkestone as a destination for South East Kent and Metropolitan visitors, simultaneously restoring the confidence of its locals while bringing back the pride the town once had during its Victorian heyday.

The Harbour Arm is a wide pier, a boulevard out at sea; once the last stop on the train for soldiers on their way to the Western Front or the first step for European travellers arriving from Boulougne on the paddle steamers.

The regeneration of The Harbour Arm has turned the town around; an oasis where the town can be viewed from a different perspective. It is a place for food and entertainment as well as one of appreciation of the town’s heritage, industry and history. It is a place to meet, eat and enjoy.

The food offers range from a double decker bus serving fresh Greek mezze, to a Champagne bar situated at the far end of the arm in the Lighthouse.

At the entrance, fresh, foraged fruit and vegetables can be bought in the Customs House and in the middle, there are huts serving street food: hog roast, Dutch pancakes, home-made burgers, Polenta encrusted fish, and a choice of beers and soft drinks.

You can buy food and drink from any outlet and eat wherever you like on the arm. It is a space to share.

In the covered area along the platform, small, inside units offer a range of great bar food, crisp pizzas and fine cheeses. English wines and craft beers are served inside, alongside real ales and a choice of lagers at several of the small bars, with one unit dedicated to an inventive selection of cocktails.

The majority of food on the Harbour Arm is locally sourced: fish from the trawlers in the adjoining harbour, bread from local bakeries, meat and vegetables from farmers and smallholders in surrounding Kent – The Garden of England. The Harbour Arm also supports small, local breweries and the growing number of quality wines produced in Kent.

Still only in the third year of its redevelopment, Folkestone’s Harbour Arm has rapidly become a food and drink destination and its reputation grows as the regeneration continues along the platform and across the railway bridge, with the addition of an onsite bakery and brewery and a regular farmer’s market.

The redevelopment of the former train station and viaduct bridge completes the Harbour Arm as a unique visitor destination.
