The character of Britain is distilled most potently in places like Chatham Dockyard – a place where British ingenuity and resolve came together to produce a bustling hub of commerce, industry and craft that left an enduring mark on the world.
For 414 years Chatham stood at the cutting edge of industry and innovation. Fifty years since the last ship was launched from its historic dockyard, Copper Rivet Distillery is reinventing Chatham for the 21st century with its totally original and distinctive gin, vodka and whisky.
We aim to reinvent Chatham for the 21st century by producing exceptional gin, whisky and vodka from scratch in bespoke stills - wrought right here in Chatham, with the same skill that local craftsmen once fashioned world-class ships.
We believe in authenticity and it is important to have a genuine connection between our spirits, how they mature and the place we matured and grew up. For this reason we had to build our distillery at Chatham Dockyard in the magnificent former Pump House No. 5. Built in 1873, the beautiful red brick building was once part of Chatham’s great historic dockyard. The Victorian building was used to pump water out of the dry docks, and is the latest and one of the most significant dockyard buildings to be brought back into use.
Drawing upon Chatham’s rich tradition of innovation, craft and trade, we are proud to bring you our own, totally original and distinctive English whisky, gin and vodka.
The distillery is the first of its kind in Kent, and one of just a handful in England responsible for the whole distillation process from grain to glass. We have complete control over our handcrafted spirits from inception as a raw ingredient, to the moment that our final spirits pour from the stills.
The range of premium quality spirits produced at the distillery includes Dockyard Gin, Vela Vodka, Son of a Gun - an unaged rye spirit, and Masthouse – a single malt whisky, available from 2020. When we are happy that our spirits have matured perfectly in our unique stills, we bottle and package them ourselves. The result? Spirits we love making and which we are sure you’ll love drinking.
The Copper Rivet Distillery is open to visitors, who can tour the Victorian pump house and see the distillation process in action, experiment with flavour profiling in the laboratory and sample our premium Kentish craft spirits for themselves.
