Union Windmill Cranbrook

Get blown away by the tallest Smock Mill in Britain. Seven floors (limited disabled access), great views, activities for children, including the opportunity to make flour using techniques which date back 10,000 years.

Union Windmill can never be described as a hidden treasure. Often referred to as the “Finest Windmill in the Country”, it stands 22 metres high with 4 “Sweeps” (Sails), each 10 metres long, and sits at the top of “The Hill” above the wonderful Medieval Market Town of Cranbrook.
Better still, come inside to climb the 7 flights of stairs and see how windmills work. We highly recommend that you check the view from the Miller's "Reefing Stage" which surrounds the Windmill.
The top 3 floors house the wind powered milling machinery, showing the various processes from the arrival of the grain from the farm to the production of the flour and other milled products. The lower floors hold exhibitions and displays, and there are opportunities for children to mill flour using traditional methods. Our Volunteers will be happy to help with any questions that you may have. Don't forget to pick up one of our children’s quizzes on your way up.
At the rear of the windmill stands the Russel Building which houses the Miller’s Workshop and an electric mill, for those days when the windmill cannot be worked. Take home your own bag of flour and try your hand at baking a loaf of bread.                                We are a "Wheels of Time" destination.
