Upnor Castle

An Elizabethan artillery fortress built on the orders of the Queen in 1559 to defend ships moored in the River Medway and Chatham Dockyard.

In 1667, despite a brave attempt, it failed to protect against the Dutch and was later used as a gunpowder magazine.
