Walmer Castle and Gardens

Take a fresh look at the castle that was once home to the Duke of Wellington. See new displays, hear previously untold stories, explore the gardens and see the heritage tulip displays and spring flowers in the borders.

Step inside the hidden castle by the sea. Surrounded by 8-acres of beautiful gardens, woodland, and sea views, it’s an exceptional and quite unique coastal castle and gardens. Enjoy displays and exhibits, and discover previously untold stories through a multimedia guide. Explore the Duke of Wellington's life and death, and how Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger lived here at the time he was organising opposition to Napoleon Bonaparte – there’s a kids version of the guide too.

Outside, discover 8 acres of award-winning gardens, including the breath-taking Broadwalk and the serene Queen Mothers Garden. Make sure to venture into the tranquil surroundings of the newly-opened Glen, a planted former chalk quarry accessible for the first time in over 100 years, and explore new interpretation and tactile displays telling the story of Walmer’s landscape as never before.

Little adventures will enjoy discovering the new natural play trail including hollow tree trunks to climb and wobbly bridges to cross. After a day of exploring, relax at the new Glasshouse Café, in the glorious setting of the kitchen garden, or enjoy a seasonal menu in the Lord Warden’s tea room.
