Walmer Castle and Gardens

Take a fresh look at the castle that was once home to the Duke of Wellington. See new displays, hear previously untold stories, explore the gardens and see the heritage tulip displays and spring flowers in the borders.

Step inside the hidden castle by the sea. Surrounded by 8-acres of beautiful gardens, woodland, and sea views, it’s an exceptional and quite unique coastal castle and gardens. The castle now boasts new displays and you can discover previously untold stories through a multimedia guide. Explore the Duke of Wellington's life and death, and how Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger lived here at the time he was organising opposition to Napoleon Bonaparte – there’s a kids version of the guide too.

Explore the magnificent gardens including the herbaceous broad walk, kitchen garden, moat garden, contemporary Queen Mother’s garden, and woodland walk, all popular with garden fans and families alike. Try some of the freshly grown produce from the kitchen garden in the castle’s tearoom, or just sit back and relax in a quiet spot and experience something special.

This spring, English Heritage are looking forward to unveiling the results of a £2.3m project at the Castle, aiming to revive and reunite gardens begun by William Pitt the Younger and assisted by his niece, Lady Hester Stanhope. The rejuvenation of these historic pleasure grounds will be combined with significant improvements to visitor facilities on site, including a brand new Glasshouse Cafe.
